We are what we see
22"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
Where do your eyes fixate on? This is both a physical and metaphorical question.
Do you look at others’ possession? Do you look at the areas in your life that are full of pain and look at only that? Do you look at material possessions longingly.
What we look at drives the light or darkness within.
If you are driving a car, and it is out of control, if you focus on the telephone pole (as many people do) — you will end up crashing into that pole!
This is hard. We want to visualize success, wealth and abundance, but how do we do so in a way that our "whole body" is NOT "full of darkness"?
Picture abundance as God would want you to abundant. And there are images of that which we will get to. Check: is it the love of MONEY that is driving your desire, or GOD? This can be a very, very difficult exercise, particularly if we partition God to Sunday and church activities. Imagine abundance as God would want your life to be abundant, abundance from the way God perceives us receiving, giving, enjoying abundance and what the outcome of that is. Is it more expensive watches or purses or cars? Or is it to use abundance in the way God ultimately wants, which is to partake in the redemption of a broken world, give Glory to Him, and teach others about how to have a relationship with Him.
Two different ways come from following two different masters. Which do you want? Light or Darkness?
Prayer
In your own words, write the specific prayer that conveys the following: God, let my eyes be good and fill my body with light. I want to hear from you what my eyes should focus on and the darkness I should turn away from. Show to me an alternate vision from loving money to loving You.
Action
Write down what your eyes want to see that is the light, that diverts you from the love of money. Describe a picture in terms of relationships, financial abundance, and healthy choices.
