Step to cleaning the inside — positive thinking
8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8-9 NIV)
And:
8-9Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. (Philippians 4:8-9 Message)
We’ve talked about embarking on clearing up the "junk" inside that can get into the way of us experiencing wealth, success, and fulfillment.
An important step to capturing our thoughts is to affix on something positive. Our mind and our actions will follow. The success path — even one where we partner spiritually with God — is largely a mental game.
I, myself, have experienced the good and the bad. When my mind tended to focus on negative outcomes or negative images, not only did I feel bad, become less confident, but the negative outcome would result. In those rare days I was filled with optimism and hope — pretty much everything happened. I stepped out in faith.
But faith takes discipline and effort to build, and so for this exercise, I want us to focus on things that are good thoughts to focus on and to take this seriously. Look at your own thoughts and what do you focus on?
Is it worry? Is it the distractions of tabloids and gossip? Is it on how your life may suck right now? What is it?
Let’s start right now to turn it around! I wish someone had sat me down and given this talk and asked me to do what I’m about to do, I know that it would have made a huge difference in my life:
Actions
Write down a person, place, or thing, a memory…whatever…that fits these categories. Write it down and make sure it is something you can picture and afix your thoughts on:
- noble
- authentic
- pure
- beautiful
- gracious
- admirable
- lovely
- compelling
- excellent
Stuck? Think about an inspiring movie. Go onto the internet at write a quote. Find a book, like Chicken Soup for the Soul and get a story. Put down the name of someone you know or maybe just read about. Fill each of these in. You absolutely must fill these in otherwise the natural negative thoughts we get from inside and from the outside will fill the space of your mind. I know: it happens to me all the time, every day.
Prayer
Ask God (remember, write down your specific prayer in your own words) to fill your mind with these things that are excellent and praiseworthy, and to take away any focus on the negative and just focus on these things.
