Multiply Your Talents is what the Kingdom Asks

"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talents[a] of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. (Matthew 25:14-18 NIV)

According to this scripture, what is the "It"?

It refers to the first part of Chapter 25 to which this verse belongs:

"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom…(Matthew 25:1 NIV)

The "It" is the Kingdom of Heaven!

It is like the man who goes on the journey and asks people to invest the talents.  In this case, talents is referring to a unit of measure.  So the literal interpretation has to do with physical coin; but the principle is how we invest something of worth, given to us by the man — the Kingdom of Heaven — and multiply.

The man who takes the five talents and produces five more receives the following praise from the man:

21"His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’  (Matthew 25:21 NIV)

The example has been set to take what we have, however much and however little, and be faithful in cultivating them in ways that grow.

The way to the Kingdom is to take what we have and apply them faithfully to multiply, to create value.

This is one of the core principles, which is to start with who you are, where you are, and what you know.  No matter how limited it appears to you, it’s about applying it faithfully.

Prayer

Ask for God to show you what "talents" you have — they can seem miniscule to you.  I know I’ve been that way — I felt I had absolutely nothing of value.  I still struggle with it, and I decided to just start with my passion, which was digging into the Bible to find life-enriching wisdom.  Believe me, I know of people who have lots of passions and talents that they just haven’t acknowledged — but write it down without editing it.  What do you love to read?  To talk about?  To do in your spare time?  What was an aspiration of yours when you were very, very young?  Who is a hero of yours?

Actions

Write down what was revealed.  If you write, "None," pray through it and ask God in a heart-to-heart, would you really have been created with no-talents at all?  Let Him speak to you.
